Sourcing Optimization
Today’s supply chains are facing dynamic challenges with the increasing complexities and rapid change inherent to globalization. It is essential that an organization understand the total landed cost of materials, components and finished goods when making smart choices related to sourcing vendors and locations. In today’s market, using spreadsheets to develop a sourcing model and calculate landed cost is not manageable. A true holistic analysis requires considerable data, skilled resources, and robust technology, as well as a comprehensive understanding
of the key factors that impact a global supply chain.
Failure to accurately quantify key cost variables early in this complex analysis can have profound implications on a company’s financial bottom line. Organizations today are finding that Low Cost Countries (LCC), selected based on perceived lowest cost, lack full supply chain cost dimensions. In addition, dynamic changes in key cost drivers (e.g. fuel costs, labor rate increases in LCC markets, etc.) can significantly erode savings that were identified when parts were initially sourced. The challenges an organization faces in developing a profitable business plan for sourcing tend to include:
- Additional inventory that must be added to compensate for the extended supply chain is often under-estimated.
- Planning for and managing the volatility in transportation costs.
- Complying with rapidly changing regulations regarding customs, packaging, and documentation.
- The data needed is not readily available and IT resources are scarce.
- Execution pressures and time-constraints often preclude sufficient understanding and/or analysis of the data.
- Organizational structures inhibit the cross functional effort needed to build and understand a comprehensive model.
