Balanced Business Intelligence: A Capability Approach to BI Program Alignment
This White Paper explores a method for assessing and planning for a well balanced business intelligence program that focuses on your organization’s distinctive culture. From dynamic to disciplined, it takes into consideration the unique circumstances of the organization’s life cycle, delivery and ability of business intelligence from a capability perspective rather than a maturity perspective. The balance of both efficiency and effectiveness is explored to enable a well rounded intelligence program in any organization.

“The suppliers we serve need to know their products are on the shelves as quickly as possible. We now have the infrastructure necessary to keep pace with high-volume replenishments driven by our continued growth. Bottom line, we are losing our ‘fire drill’ mentality and seeing more sound and calm production.”

Sourcing Optimization

Today’s supply chains are facing dynamic challenges with the increasing complexities and rapid change inherent to globalization. It is essential that an organization understand the total landed cost of materials, components and finished goods when making smart choices related to sourcing vendors and locations. In today’s market, using spreadsheets to develop a sourcing model and calculate landed cost is not manageable. A true holistic analysis requires considerable data, skilled resources, and robust technology, as well as a comprehensive understanding
of the key factors that impact a global supply chain.

Failure to accurately quantify key cost variables early in this complex analysis can have profound implications on a company’s financial bottom line. Organizations today are finding that Low Cost Countries (LCC), selected based on perceived lowest cost, lack full supply chain cost dimensions. In addition, dynamic changes in key cost drivers (e.g. fuel costs, labor rate increases in LCC markets, etc.) can significantly erode savings that were identified when parts were initially sourced. The challenges an organization faces in developing a profitable business plan for sourcing tend to include:

  • Additional inventory that must be added to compensate for the extended supply chain is often under-estimated.
  • Planning for and managing the volatility in transportation costs.
  • Complying with rapidly changing regulations regarding customs, packaging, and documentation.
  • The data needed is not readily available and IT resources are scarce.
  • Execution pressures and time-constraints often preclude sufficient understanding and/or analysis of the data.
  • Organizational structures inhibit the cross functional effort needed to build and understand a comprehensive model.

The Solution

Working with the latest tools in network and inventory optimization, CIBER can help companies efficiently and effectively answer the following Sourcing questions in a timely manner:

  • How will the sourcing selection impact inventory? Will there be a significant change to cycle stock, safety stock, or in-transit inventory?
  • How would an improvement in purchase price impact the sourcing decision? Would it also impact the network structure?
  • How will the cost of fuel impact the sourcing decision?
  • How would changes to payment terms or exchange rate fluctuations impact sourcing decisions?
  • How would the overhead and administration costs (sourcing staff, learning curve, due diligence, relationship building/travel costs) impact total costs?
  • What is the appropriate balance between cost reduction, quality and/or performance improvement?
  • What impact would switching costs have on the overall sourcing strategy and cost structure?

Technology is a tool that enables change, yet it is only one part of the overall equation. CIBER Supply Chain
Services provide leading companies with comprehensive consulting, process and execution services to improve their supply chain. CIBER accomplishes this by leveraging industry experience and expertise with technology. This positively impacts the efficiency of the processes deployed and increasing the potential for an organization to achieve their specific overall financial and business objectives. CIBER’s support services include:

Data Gathering, Verification and Analysis

CIBER’s data gathering, verification, and analysis process is based on a proven methodology that ensures integrity and stability. Our consulting team carefully collects and analyzes data while partnering with the client to ensure the best possible results.

Current State Analysis, Including Inventory Optimization within the Existing Network

CIBER’s Current State Analysis tests the existing sources within the network for robustness and opportunities for improvement, while inventory optimization balances inventory investment with customer service goals.

Future State Optimization and Analysis, including Simulation and Net Present Value Analysis

CIBER’s Future State Optimization and Simulation process includes multiple iterations of inventory optimization and network sourcing scenarios, testing for robustness and sensitivity to change. CIBER works with each client to provide a Net Present Value and Cash Flow Analysis to support a business case for change.

The Benefits

Smarter, Sustainable Supply Chain of the Future

By performing “what if” optimizations and simulations, CIBER and the client work together to create realistic plans based on current and future costs and constraints. CIBER efficiently and effectively works with the client to create a robust and sustainable supply chain for the future.

Leverage Supply Chain Planning to Improve Performance and Increase Profits

As part of a Global Sourcing study, CIBER holistically evaluates each potential scenario to determine changes in cost and risk. CIBER considers how each portion of the supply chain is impacted, giving the client an advanced understanding of the elasticity of costs and economic conditions within the supply chain. This effectively ensures the client can make the right sourcing decisions armed with a comprehensive understanding of the key factors that impact a global supply chain.
