Image World 2 ~ New Dimensions
NIH Awards the Image World2 Contract
Rockville, MD -- January 4, 2001 -- The National
Institutes of Health (NIH) has announced the award of their major
information technology (IT) government-wide acquisition contract (GWAC),
ImageWorld2 New Dimensions. Twenty-three (23) multiple award Indefinite/Delivery
Indefinite/Quantity (ID/IQ) contracts were awarded to provide the
NIH and Federal Government worldwide with access to the most recent
and evolving technologies in the IT imaging industry. Nineteen (19)
of these ID/IQ contracts were awarded to small, small-disadvantaged,
and woman-owned businesses. The maximum estimated dollar value for
all contracts awarded under IW2 is $15 billion.
The IW2 contract will provide our government customers with
a broad range of imaging solutions that will bring new and long lasting
relationships with many cream of the crop small and niche
industry partners, said Dr. Leamon Lee, Associate Director,
Office of Administration at NIH.
The ImageWorld2 contract has three broad technology areas called
Technology Functional Areas (TFAs); 1) Business, 2) Medical Sciences,
and 3) Scientific/GIS imaging solutions. Elmer Sembly III, Associate
Director for Communications and Outreach, states the ImageWorld2
contract can really be considered three contracts in one. It is vastly
expanded from the initial Image World vehicle --offering not only
the imaging applications and services related to business and document
workflow management systems, but also the emerging medical and scientific
imaging solutions and technologies like Geographic Information Systems
(GIS). We are bringing the latest in technology to the government
marketplace with their commercial solutions.
Nine of the new prime awardees provide powerful GIS tools to integrate
key data components for geographic information analyses for almost
every scientific discipline. These services and solutions help scientists
and other research professionals to manage highly complex data and
make better decisions. Some of the most popular uses of GIS technologies
are found in:
- Epidemiological Studies, Outbreak
- Investigation and Disease Tracking
- Site and Facility Inspections
- Program/Project Evaluations
- Spatial Data Visualization Analyses
- Site Location and Patient Distribution Analysis
- Community Needs Assessment and Service Demand Analysis
The National Institutes of Health Information Technology Acquisition
and Assessment Center (NITAAC) awarded the contracts. NITAAC is recognized
as a center for acquisition expertise. For general information about
