Jill Hays Advantages of a Collaborative Retail Inventory Management Solution

Jill Hays, Senior Supply Chain Consultant  :  11 May 2011 / 3:07 PM  :  9 9 comments

Deciding how much product is needed, when it is needed, and where it's needed-is one of the main challenges of any supply chain.  The implementation and stabilization of a Retail Inventory Management solution (often referred to as Vendor Managed Inventory, Quick Response, Supplier Managed Inventory, or Collaborative, Planning, Forecasting, and Replenishment) was the approach the Parts Division of a major OEM which supports the entire US, Mexican and Canadian dealer body with parts for maintenance and repair of vehicles, took on.

As part of the team of professional demand planners, inventory managers and technical analysts that were deployed at the location; the launch was both challenging and exciting.  After all, the shift from a decentralized replenishment strategy ...

Learn about the CIBER difference at ProMat 2011

,   :  16 March 2011 / 9:00 AM  :  0 0 comments

As attendees at this year’s ProMat 2011 show in Chicago file into the McCormick South Conference Center beginning on Monday, they will be awed by the large number and variety of machinery, conveyor systems, work assist devices and material handling equipment on display.  It is truly an operations person’s dream to watch, touch and, in some cases, operate all of this machinery.

However, there will also be a large number of niche and end-to-end Supply Chain consulting companies present on the show floor as well.  In many cases, these companies can provide your organization with innovative and practical solutions that will often result in even more dramatic savings than the fanciest piece of new machinery.

With all of these consulting company vendors at ProMat 2011...

Why meet with CIBER at ProMat 2011?

,   :  15 March 2011 / 9:08 AM  :  0 0 comments

As attendees at this year’s ProMat 2011 conference set their sights on next week’s event in Chicago, what will they find when they stop to chat at CIBER’s booth (3853)?

While CIBER does not sell the latest integrated packaging machinery, conveyor systems or newest technology of high reach fork trucks, we can help companies across any vertical significantly reduce costs and streamline operations across their entire supply chain enterprise.  CIBER’s portfolio of solutions that we will be discussing with conference attendees include:

  • Network Design and Optimization –  how to balance the cost and design of your physical distribution network with your customer service goals and objectives
  • Retail Inventory Management Solutions – how t...

ProMat 2011 - Just around the corner

ProMat 2011 - Just around the corner

With less than two weeks to go before the kick-off of ProMat 2011 in Chicago, what will the expected 12,500 business professional who will be attending this year’s event be looking to gain from this huge conference?

While the macro economy is showing some pockets of gradual recovery, senior management and shop floor managers alike are still under significant pressures to reduce operating and distribution costs. As investment budgets, which have largely been non-existent over the past two years, are now being gradually increased, attendees at ProMat 2011 will be looking for equipment, machinery and innovative services that can dramatically improve throughput, cost-effectively increase capacity and reduce non-value added activit...

    Jill Hays Enabling Retail Nirvana...

    Jill Hays, Senior Supply Chain Consultant  :  10 February 2011 / 1:35 PM  :  0 0 comments

Retail Nirvana is when you have the Right Product, at the Right Place, at the Right Time, in the Right Quantities, and at the Right Price.

In the automotive service parts business, whether it is for passenger cars, heavy trucks, or construction and agricultural equipment, Nirvana is to have parts waiting on the shelf for the customer at point of service. In most cases, this means having the part in stock at the Parts Counter within the Dealership.  In other words, having the right product, at the right place…

Another way to think about it is that the goal is Fixed First Visit - the vehicle or equipment is repaired promptly without repeat return trips to the service facility. Having parts on the shelf (Ri...

Maximizing Inventory Investment across the Retail Distribution Enterprise

    ,   :  25 January 2011 / 10:32 AM  :  1 1 comments

One of the first lessons all of us learned in our early school days was 1 + 1 = 2. However, in business, this simple mathematical formula doesn’t always hold true. For instance, in the area of managing inventory across a large, SKU intensive, retail organization, 1 + 1 may equal < 2, if certain Retail Inventory Management (RIM) principles and systems are put in place.

Retail Inventory Management concepts and solutions are certainly not new. Depending on the industry vertical, RIM solutions have been deployed in many shapes and sizes for many years, often under program names such as Continuous Replenishment, Efficient Consumer Response (ECR), Vendor Managed Inventory (VMI), Category Management, Continuous Planning, Forecasting, and Replenishment (CPFR) and more. Howev...

Jill Hays Pondering Unique Supply Chain Challenges

    Jill Hays, Senior Supply Chain Consultant  :  20 December 2010 / 9:24 AM  :  1 1 comments

Articles on Supply Chain Management for traditional supply chains are “thick on the ground” these days. But some recent experiences have me ruminating on the alternative supply chains that you may not often see featured in a case study, white paper, or professional article.

One such alternative supply chain exists within the pawn shop industry.

I had the experience of entering a pawn shop recently, the short version of the story is a local reality show on truTV enticed me to come in and try to sell something while the cameras “watched.” (Shoot me a note and I will give you the particulars, including the long version of the tale.) This experience was a lot of fun, and it got me to thinking about what the supply chain for pawn shops must look like.

    If yo...

Jeff Caza Improving Route Delivery Execution

    Jeff Caza, Senior Consultant  :  01 December 2010 / 9:30 AM  :  1 1 comments

CIBER has many clients that operate route deliveries, specifically in the food and beverage market. These companies are working hard to find innovative ways to answer the increasingly high demands of customers and compete in their market by providing value-added services while at the same time decreasing their costs. Why not create those cost savings and operational efficiencies outside the buildings and close the loop at the final destination of the product? One way to achieve this and gain the edge on competitors is to extend the functionality onto the delivery trucks. Another is to implement a Direct Store Delivery (DSD) solution. Both will provide inventory visibility and exceptional functionality for both the customer and the company in one of the most important aspects ...

Jill Hays What does Pop Tart Sushi mean for the Supply Chain?

    Jill Hays, Senior Supply Chain Consultant  :  20 October 2010 / 7:18 AM  :  0 0 comments

Kellogg's recently opened a pop up store in Times Square cleverly named Pop Tart World.  At Pop Tart world, which will be open for a limited time frame (although there are reports that Kellogg is considering extending it beyond January 2011) locals and tourists alike can enjoy an hourly light show, buy a t-shirt, and enjoy an innovative snack like Pop Tart Sushi.

If you are like me, the concept of "Pop Tart Sushi" (three kinds of minced Pop-Tarts rolled in fruit roll-up) probably makes you smile a bit and think 'oooohhhhkkkkaaaay- that's interesting.'  And I'll admit there is a little part of me that wants to go there and check it out, have a little Pop Tart Sushi and buy a t-shirt or souvenir of some sort.

So what does this all mean for Supply Chain...

Jeff Caza System vs. Employee Directed WMS Tasks

    Jeff Caza, Senior Consultant  :  07 October 2010 / 8:41 AM  :  0 0 comments

It is well known that a paperless warehouse is often superior to a paper system.  All systems such as RF, Voice or Light systems will offer a decrease in errors and an increase in efficiency throughout the warehouse.  What about the assignment of tasks and the priority behind each task?  Too often, the queue is left to the employees to manage or the work queue is prioritized on the arrival of the order or product.

Anyone that has been a part of a WMS implementation team has struggled with the veteran on the receiving dock that has been performing the duties “their way” for 25 years.  We hear the following phrases “I can choose a better spot in the warehouse than the system can.”  Or when asked “How do you know where that it...
