Allan Shub Business Architecture 101 : Value Streams vs. Value Chains

Allan Shub, Director - Practice  :  11 October 2011 / 1:05 PM  :  0 0 comments

In the previous edition of this blog, I introduced the concept of value streams as a key construct for business architecture. In the greater blogosphere there is considerable confusion between the terms ‘value stream’ and ‘value chain’. The terms are often used interchangeably, but this is a mistake. Understanding the difference is important to the domain of business architecture.

In his book The Great Transition (1995), James Martin stated “A value stream is an end-to-end collection of activities that create a result for a ‘customer’ who may be the ultimate customer or an internal ‘end user’ of the value stream. The value stream has a clear goal: to satisfy (or, better, to delight) the customer.” Examples of value steams include ‘Prosp...

Allan Shub Business Architecture 101

Allan Shub, Director - Practice  :  27 September 2011 / 4:24 PM  :  0 0 comments

What is business architecture? The Business Architecture Special Interest Group (BASIG [part of OMG]) defines it as “a blueprint of the enterprise that provides a common understanding of the organization and is used to align strategic objectives and tactical demands.” Business architecture is the capstone of a complete enterprise architecture (EA) program. EA without business architecture will not meet the needs of the business. An effective implementation of business architecture not only helps ensure that IT assets and resources are aligned with business objectives and cost effective, but that the business itself is appropriately structured and managed. This blog will describe the basic components of business architecture with an electric utility example. Future ...

Paul Mayne The future of the Data Center as a CIO Asset

Paul Mayne, Principal Consultant - Architect  :  12 September 2011 / 8:46 AM  :  0 0 comments

Today’s IT department is seeing the presence of a data center disappearing in more ways than one. Most desktops, laptops and smart phones are providing the services the IT user traditionally requested from IT. Almost 40% of a company’s computing power now resides outside of the data center. Data is now delivered in many more formats (remember the green bar paper that was delivered in the mornings from the IT print shop…oops, I am showing my age!). In reality, IT infrastructure does not sit in a single location anymore, or we may not even know where it lives. Computing power is distributed, more  business user information resides in personal computers, USBs and attached to emails, so how does a CIO manage (and secure) all of this?

The magic word that is used and not fully underst...

Stephen Cohen HTML5 and Enterprise Mobility Solutions

Stephen Cohen, Principal Consultant - Architect  :  12 September 2011 / 8:44 AM  :  0 0 comments

Many major businesses are looking towards a mobility solution, either for their workforce or customer base. There are many challenges faced in the decision on what applications to make available and what devices and mobile operating systems to support. Can HTML5 help the IT organizations deliver faster and for a lower cost than building device and OS specific mobile applications.

HTML5 Benefits:

  • Device agnostic
  • HTML5 compatible browser required
  • IPhone  and IPad
  • Android
  • Windows Mobile
  • Symbian
  • Blackberry
  • Eliminates the need for proprietary applications such as Flash
  • Deliver PDF, Audio , Video, Geo-Location
  • HTML5...

Gregg Powers Part IV – Avoiding IT Strategy “Shelf Ware Syndrome”

    Gregg Powers, Senior Management Consultant  :  07 September 2011 / 3:24 PM  :  0 0 comments

In the last blog entry, we looked at some of the ways in which business drivers are employed as a part of IT strategy development.  In this 4th in a series of 10 blog entries covering relevant and aligned IT Strategy, we explore in more detail, some of the ways to prevent an IT Strategic Plan from becoming another piece of “shelf ware” – a document that once created, spends the majority of its time on the shelf.

    constellations of stars

Organizations going through the effort to develop an IT Strategic Plan must make efforts to operationalize the plan.  To do this, the plan cannot be relegated to the shelf, but must be put in the han...

    Dave Amborski Why Change Management?

    Dave Amborski, Vice President – Change, Learning and Performance Practice  :  25 August 2011 / 10:26 AM  :  0 0 comments

Most issues during large system implementations are related to people and not systems. Our CIBER Change, Learning and Performance Practice understands this risk component of a system implementation and the impact of change on the people who will be using the new system. The new software, automated business processes, and workflows will bring about significant change to how work is performed by employees and managers. Consequently, the changes that accompany implementation of new systems and business processes often create resistance and fear of what is to come with the new system. Resistance to change is normal, inevitable, and expected. Human beings have a natural fear of change. We are creatures of habit in both our personal and professional lives. Failing to address this resistance t...

Tom Finneran Some Useful Views of Metadata

    Tom Finneran, Principal Consultant  :  14 June 2010 / 10:40 AM  :  1 1 comments

Most IT practitioners recognize the importance of metadata but not all can describe it’s value.  Gartner has stated these benefits of metadata management:

  • Increased reuse of established software assets
  • Reduced time to perform change impact analysis
  • Quality assurance that all affected assets are part of a coordinated change
  • Identification of redundancies and opportunities to reduce maintenance costs through consolidation
  • Improved understanding of overlaps in business areas, including during mergers and acquisitions
  • Accuracy of end-user analysis
  • Savings in training costs
  • Speed of business intelligence tool implementations
  • Better management decisions

Ashu Bhatia IT Strategy – bringing it all together

    Ashu Bhatia, Director of Delivery  :  21 May 2010 / 4:54 PM  :  0 0 comments

I often talk to folks within the executive team that seem to be struggling with issues around how to service business needs, how to fund initiatives, which metrics to report, etc. I always bring a simple and powerful framework to consider these questions:

IT Strategy Alignment with Business Strategy – To understand the role that IT plays as an enabler and value partner, we need to start with looking at the following dynamics of the marketplace in the industry:

  • How is the industry doing? Industry growth rate, industry margins/pricing, industry challenges – cost pressure/ fear of substitute ...

    Mark Benedict Practical Process Improvement

Mark Benedict, Director of Quality Assurance and Testing Services  :  06 May 2010 / 11:57 AM  :  3 3 comments

Process Improvements are routinely needed everywhere in the IT and IS worlds. But no matter what the process is that needs improvement, the technology that needs to evolve or the new methods people need to use the overarching story is the same: We need to do this, but we just don't have time to do it. We're too busy working.

Even in organizations that have it all figured out, it comes down to this one last thing. Making the change. And that's where the worst resistance in any organization hits your best intentions with a sucker punch.

Recently I've gotten calls from several organizations that have done all the right things from Root-Cause Analysis with all the right people and points-of-view involved, realistic process re-engineering, the cr...
